UN Refugee Agency Raises Concern Over Myanmar Returns from Malaysia

(MENAFN) The UN refugee agency has expressed concern over Malaysia’s reported plans to send around 1,500 Myanmar nationals back to their country, warning that ongoing fighting and widespread rights abuses could prevent safe returns.

UNHCR spokesperson Matthew Saltmarsh told reporters in Geneva on Tuesday that the group had apparently remained in Malaysia, while efforts were continuing to appeal against the planned return.

"This is a very fluid situation," Saltmarsh said.

"We are concerned by the reported imminent return of some 1,500 individuals ..., with ongoing armed conflict and widespread violence and human rights violations across Myanmar," he added.

Saltmarsh stressed that UNHCR believes conditions in Myanmar currently do not allow for "safe, dignified, and sustainable returns."

"Under international law, no one should be sent to a country where they may face persecution, torture, serious harm, or other threats to life, liberty, and security," he said.

He added that UNHCR would continue working with Malaysian authorities through technical assistance, policy discussions and capacity-building efforts aimed at establishing effective and accessible protection mechanisms.

According to reports, dozens of buses escorted by police reached a stadium near the Lumut naval base in northwestern Malaysia on Tuesday as preparations for the returns were underway.
