Myanmar Blast at Mining Site Kills Forty-Five, Injures Many

(MENAFN) A powerful explosion on Sunday ripped through a building in northeastern Myanmar that was reportedly being used to store mining explosives, killing more than 45 people, according to rescue workers and local media reports. Around 70 others were injured in the incident.

The blast occurred around midday in Kaungtup village, located in Namhkam township in Shan state, an area close to the Chinese border.

The region is under the control of the Ta’ang National Liberation Army (TNLA), an ethnic armed group and political organization that is engaged in a long-running conflict with Myanmar’s military authorities and seeks greater autonomy.

Chinese state broadcaster CCTV reported that the explosion also caused extensive damage to nearby homes, adding that initial assessments suggest it originated at a site storing large quantities of mining explosives.

Local Myanmar media outlets provided varying casualty estimates, reporting that between 50 and 55 people were killed in the blast.
